Ja.
Was? Was hat das mit Demokratie zu tun? Stimmt.
Also Hönecker war kein Idiot.
Also 13 Jahre lang diese Ämter.
Was natürlich unsinnig ist.
Man sieht dort zahlreiche Kameras.
Es heißt Ich will meine Akte!.
Man kann sagen, was man möchte.
"What I actually want to know from you is what life was like for people in the GDR, or people who now know something about the West. So for example writers, publishers or musicians who now know more about the West and life in the West and what their life was like in the GDR."
"So, first of all, GDR citizens were possibly the best informed citizens in the world. They read the GDR newspapers and they listened to GDR radio and they watched GDR television. And at the same time they watched Western television and listened to Western radio. There was Dresden, which was called the Valley of the Clueless in the GDR.That was not reachable by terrestrial television from the West because it was a valley. But in the 80s the GDR erected special antennas in the new housing developments built in Dresden and fed in Western programs so that these citizens in the GDR could also watch Western television..."
"So everyone knew about the West."
"Of course, in that respect they were better informed about the West than the West was about the East, because the West, I don't want to always speak for the rest of the world, they were not interested in what was happening in the East. What was happening behind the so-called Iron Curtain, they didn't care. In Dresden, so let's say, this country until 1949, the Federal Republic was only founded in 1949 as a West German separatist state, after which the GDR was founded. As is the case in every country, some live in the south, others in the north, so the families are geographically separated because you live in one country, that was unproblematic. But then due to the division, due to the two-state system, the border suddenly stood between the families, but the relationship remained unchanged."
"That means that due to this familial relationship there was also an exchange of information on another level. And as a GDR citizen, as part of a so-called family reunification, you could leave the GDR and move to the West to be with your family, if you wanted to. That was also possible. So the interaction, especially in the last 20 years, was very relaxed and very open."
"Okay."
"So we didn't live behind the moon. And every year about three million GDR citizens traveled to the Federal Republic for visits, three million, every year to West Germany and most of them came back."
"Okay."
"The problem was, we could have let even more travel, but that was a question of foreign currency. Because for example, if you bought a train ticket here in Berlin for a trip to Cologne, then as a GDR citizen, behind the border, so behind the Harz mountains to Cologne, you had to pay the rest."
"Okay."
"And not as an individual citizen, but the GDR was then billed for it collectively. So and so many people traveled so and so many kilometers on West German tracks. So the state pays the costs for the trip."
"And since foreign currency was always scarce in the GDR, they tried to limit that in the usual way, so that not everyone traveled there at the same time."
"And also, when I was traveling in the Federal Republic as a journalist, I had an allowance, I bought 100 D-Mark a day, so from the 100 D-Mark I had to pay for the hotel and food and nourishment and so on and other expenses. And so that was pretty tight.
So it's not like it is claimed, that people were walled in here and couldn't get out. So that is, what I see now in films or books, that is what the world sees, so that all GDR citizens are locked inside the Wall and they knew nothing about the rest of the world."
"That is, that is, so this narrative is maintained unchanged in the West. That the GDR was the largest prison in Europe, this is my country, which is really nonsense."
"To illustrate this, I went to high school and did my Abitur (graduation) in Torgau on the Elbe. Today that is in Saxony, so it was the deepest province, and in the house where I lived, up in a small room, we hung out there as 'Penäler' (high school students), 16, 17, 18 years old, in our clique as they say today. We sat there, drank beer."
"And we have, and that was 1968, and that's when the animated film of the Beatles came out, 'Yellow Submarine', was in 1968, an animated film."
"And we painted the walls in this room with these figures from this animated film, the Beatles."
"And my children, I have three sons, for one of my milestone birthdays, they made a film and went to the house where I lived 40, 50 years ago. And the drawing was still there on the wall. So the Beatles, and they [my children] photographed it. You could still find that. The charm had faded a bit, but it was clearly recognizable. And my youngest posted these photos somewhere on social media.
I don't know, Instagram or TikTok or whatever, and he got furious protests from West Germany. That it was all a lie, because people in the East had no idea about that, they didn't know that the Beatles existed and such. I just want to say with this, and that was 30 years after the fall of the Wall.
And these were young people who reacted to it, who hadn't even experienced the Wall. But it just shows how deeply this narrative sits. And they really still believe today, so we were so isolated from the world."
"That is absolute nonsense. Of course it wasn't the case that you could get on the subway here today and drive over. You could until '61. From '61 that wasn't the case. The Wall stood there normally. But if you had reasons, family birthdays, weddings, some anniversary, if you were traveling as a journalist, if you were traveling as an artist, as theater troupes, if you were traveling as an athlete, you had your passport, then you went here to the front... given a free West. At the front of the train station in the street was the border crossing, then you went over there."
"A nice story that I experienced again, that was in the mid-80s. And it was here today in the Academy of Arts, GDR. Where is it? Here at Kochtplatz. Kochtplatz is here, where the Charité is. And the events took place there. That was in 1984, so the 40th anniversary of the assassination attempt on Hitler. July 20, 1944 there was an assassination attempt on Hitler. And there was an event in the Academy of Arts remembering these days. A documentary film was shown. Next to me sat someone and I noticed that he wasn't from here. A West Berliner."
And he always asked me when someone said something on the podium up front, who is that and so on, then I told him, that's so-and-so. And the event was over and then we wanted to, then we said, we can still drink a cup of coffee. And then we went down the street, there was the artists' club 'Möwe' (Seagull). It was closed, then we went here to the front. Across the street here was the Hotel Adria. That has since been torn down, it's newly built now. There used to be a Hotel Adria there. And all the restaurant seats were taken. And somewhere we still found something. And then he said, and the West Berliners always had to leave by midnight.
He was only there for this event and he had to leave at midnight. I then brought him to the border crossing. And then he said, you should come visit me in West Berlin. And I said, gladly, when? He said, tomorrow. And presumably he assumed I wouldn't go. So I said, good, I'll come. And then I visited him the next day. And he was one of the sons of a Count of Schwerin, who was sentenced to death by the People's Court after this attack on Hitler. And he was one of the sons of the Count of Schwerin. And then I was at his place for dinner in Charlottenburg. And he then went to Nepal or Bhutan as a development aid worker. And then the Wende came and the Wall fell. And then he suddenly got in touch, he was back here, he was in the SPD. And then we met again, this time in West Berlin. They were at Windeplatz. And he always wanted to recruit me for the SPD. So I said, no, that's not my turf. And he then became Chief of Police in Potsdam. He also invited me again and there he was then in the 90s and in the 2000s, I think, before he retired, he was then Chief of Police in Potsdam. But I, I admit, surprised him a little. When I said, , I'll gladly come visit you. And he had said tomorrow."
I visited him the next day for dinner. And it was, I mention this because I told my wife this terday, he, his wife and his two children sat at the table with me. Everyone had cloth napkins with monograms. I had a paper napkin. So the social difference was clearly made with the napkin. So they paid close attention to such subtleties."
"That is something I didn't know. So if I had heard this story earlier, I would have said that's crazy. But that's normal. So really. So GDR citizens could."
"I was once in Cologne in the Romano-Germanic Museum, that's right next to the cathedral. It was empty. And I got to talking with one of the guards, there is always staff sitting there watching that you don't take anything out. And I got into conversation with him. And I told him that I was from the GDR. And he looked and then said, I must be an athlete. I said, no, definitely not. So he knew that GDR athletes also go to the West. And then he looked, I say, I am not an athlete. And then he looked at me quite pityingly. And I say, what's wrong? Then you must be an invalid pensioner. I say, I'm not that either. I am a normal person and so on. And he was also surprised. As I said, you either had to be an athlete, pensioner or invalid."
So not true. That's how it is. No, so let's say, this lie that the GDR citizens were walled in and couldn't get out. They cultivate that very intensively to this day. And there are enough West Germans who have never been here in the East. Still not. And they also have no interest in it. And they believe what they are told. Okay. These stories. And life here was of course different than today. . So there was soon, let's say, a joke that people told each other. In the GDR we had money, but no foreign currency. Today we have foreign currency, but no money. So the, let's say, the freedoms in the GDR."
"They were of course limited. So the classic civil liberties were of course limited. But it wasn't that bad. But they existed. So you could travel, you lived in social security. . So social security, i.e. job security. Children could go to school, they were cared for, there were kindergartens. . You could get professional qualifications. That was not bad at all. And the understanding of what socialist democracy is, was of course different than today's bourgeois democracy. . And that has now changed somewhat. But the restriction you have in this society now is first of all that you of course need money for this kind of freedom. . And if you have little money, and more and more people in this country do, you can't say that you are free. . So, if freedom is reduced to the fact that I can vote every four years and can vote for candidates that I did not choose. . That was different in the GDR."
"So in the GDR it was said that there are no free elections. There was a unity list, there were names on it, and you folded that piece of paper on Friday. And then they were elected. . What is always not mentioned in this narrative. . That the people, before they got on this list, they had to, they were proposed by parties, we had several parties. . By the Cultural League or by the FDJ or by the trade union. And these people, these candidates, these applicants, had to face public election meetings. . Anyone could go there, and anyone could ask questions there. Oh. And if this candidate did not cut a good figure at such an election event, he did not get on the list. But whoever passed there, got on the list. . Today, you have absolutely no influence on how these party election lists are put together. Right. The parties decide that themselves. Right. And you have the opportunity to say, well, I want him or I don't want him. But it is in principle, the specification is much more, how shall I say, independent of the voter than in the GDR. So that's basically always like the Confucian principle. . That means, they apply on the different levels. Right. And if they made it through one level, then they make it to the next. . That's Confucius. No one here calls it that, but candidates were nominated in the GDR according to this principle. Nominated first. . And then they were elected collectively. Oh, I see. And that was the understanding of socialist democracy. . Whereas this democracy is of course restricted by the fact that you, that is the laissez-faire that we experience today. . That people believe that if they have a lot of money, they can do whatever they want. Then they stand above the law. Right."
"So and that is this primeval capitalist principle, the law of the strongest. . If Iran doesn't do what the Americans want, then it gets bombed. And if the elected president Maduro of Venezuela is not a friend of the Americanos, what do you do, then he gets kidnapped. . Excuse me, where do we live here? What kind of freedom is it if the one who considers himself the policeman of the world, overrides international law and other rights of other nations. . Imagine if they fly into Beijing with helicopters and kidnap Xi Jinping. . How would the Chinese behave? Wow. They wouldn't take to the streets and say, wonderful, now we are rid of him, but they would take up arms. So if I want a helicopter with Xi Jinping, so what was your question again? The question was, how would the Chinese react if American helicopters landed in Beijing and kidnapped Xi Jinping? That's madness for them. They are at war. Right. Venezuela was not in a position, after their president was kidnapped, to wage war against the Americans. And that is exactly the problem. The Americans know they are the strongest military power in the world. . And they use that rigorously. . They don't care about international law, they don't care about national rights of other states, they don't care about the freedom of other countries to be able to elect their own leaders or not. . What? What does that have to do with democracy? Right. So you should say, always be very careful with these concepts of peace and democracy and ask, freedom for whom and democracy for whom. . Okay."
"So a question about the GDR election. So I have heard from many people that they think Honecker is an idiot. So do you believe that too?"
"No" (firm and resolute attitude)
"So a lot of GDR citizens previously told me that they think Erich Honecker is an idiot, what he did. So an idiot in government responsibility, I only know one and his name is Trump. Okay. So Honecker was not an idiot. He was overwhelmed in his position. Okay and what does that mean?"
"So you have to see the following, and that's why I'm always very careful with such statements, that he was an idiot. So. But many people, many people told me that. I'm not denying that. That may well have been the case. But as I said, I'm also very, very careful with such claims. Why? Honecker was in prison from 1935 to 1965, 1935 to 1945, for 10 years. , because he was against the NS (Nazis). Because he was anti-fascist. , right. You have to see, he was born in 1912, when he went to prison, he was 23 years old. , pretty young. Pretty young. That's also actually the age or the phase of life where you study, where you learn, where you travel the world to get to know the world. He sat in prison. He sat in prison and got nothing out of it. That means he was robbed not only of his time of life, but also of his youth and also the opportunity to educate himself. , but I mean, from 1935 to 1945, prison might have been a better place for him. So maybe prison was a better place for him. A better place. So if you are in the world now, there was a war. Maybe that was a better place."
"So have you ever been to prison? No. Well. Prison is prison, no matter where. So I know many prisons. Okay. I let myself be locked in Yulia Tymoshenko's cell. I was in Minnesota, in St. Paul, so in Minneapolis, and had myself locked in a cell there. Just to have this feeling of what it's like behind bars. You only knew it for a few minutes, so not for days. But you never knew it, and I know the prisons here in the GDR. So prison is not a vacation anywhere in the world. So you are told when you have to get up, when to eat, how you have to move. You have a room three by four meters. And when the cell door closes behind you, and you sit alone on your cot, then you are really just alone with yourself. And then you are lonely and abandoned, and you don't realize what is happening out in the world. So I believe these ten years for Honecker, they didn't just mean lost time in life, but also the opportunity to educate himself, to learn something about the world. Because I say, at this young age you are simply more open-minded and curious about the world."
"After 1945 he immediately got into political positions. First he was chairman of the anti-fascist main youth committee here in Berlin. Then in 1946 he became chairman of the FDJ, the youth association. Then in the mid-50s he was sent to Moscow to study. Then he became Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED. In 1971 he became First Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED. And in 1976 also Chairman of the Council of State of the GDR. And Chairman of the Council of State, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED and Chairman of the National Defense Council he was until 1989, until his fall. So for 13 years he held these offices. He wasn't a particularly intelligent person, but he knew how to deal with people. He had an attitude, in Germany they say 'Lord of the manor mentality' (Gutsherrenmentalität). So he decided all sorts of things. And if people had a problem, they wanted to emigrate and the authorities didn't allow them, then they wrote to Honecker and then Honecker decided. So that's what I mean by 'Lord of the manor mentality'."
"So Western politicians who dealt with him, from Helmut Schmidt to Günter Gaus, appreciated his phenomenal memory. A phenomenal one, like an elephant. And Helmut Schmidt, the Chancellor, admired him. He said, the economic figures about the economy that he has in his head, he (Schmidt) always needed his staff for that. I mean Helmut Schmidt. He had to ask his staff. Honecker had all of that in his head. So to call such a person with, as I said, limited intellectual capabilities an idiot, I thought was completely inappropriate here. And I also know his wife, she was originally a teacher. So Margot Honecker was intellectually superior to Erich Honecker. But that doesn't mean he was an idiot or a fool. He differed from his predecessor Walter Ulbricht. In many books, Ulbricht was a strategist. He always decided with a long-term view and always asked himself the question, if I decide this way and that, what will happen then? So this strategist, which was not the case with Honecker, in Germany they say he played fireman. That means you have an acute problem, it was then decided immediately. Without considering what consequences it has. So Ulbricht was a strategist and had to, regarding the limits of his intellectual capabilities, that's why he gathered people around him who were smarter than himself. Which on the one hand was always an expression of great sovereignty, namely to say, I have people around me who know more than I do. Honecker didn't have this greatness. He preferred to surround himself with nobodies and made the decisions alone. And who buttered him up and told him how great he was and how brilliant the decisions were that he had made again. So as I said, his predecessor Ulbricht was cut from a different cloth. There is no universal genius who masters everything. And it really is a matter of, when you guide and lead a state, that you use the smartest minds of the country as much as possible to make smart politics. And Honecker was not capable of that. But he wasn't an idiot."
"Good. So if former members of the SED say that, then also with this thought, well I'm not to blame for what happened with this GDR. That was his fault. But they actually belonged to this party and in a certain way also buttered Honecker up. So there was no one who said Honecker must go. At least not publicly demanded in the party before 1989, in the late 80s . But that was not a publicly presented demand in the party. It was only the internal discussion and no one did it. And afterwards, when Honecker was gone, they were always against him and that's why Honecker is an idiot. They always say, after the Wende they always said we were lied to and deceived. Which is of course nonsensical. If you let yourself be deceived, then you were to blame yourself. Right. It is basically the attempt to delegate responsibility. There are also many who left the GDR because they couldn't get along with the political system or didn't want to have too much to do with it. It is like in every country in the world that of course not everyone who lives in a state thinks the state they live in is great. Right. That is the case in China, that was the case in the GDR, that is the case in the USA today. And then there are always two possibilities. Either you adapt and keep your mouth shut or you go out, you leave this country. And many who left the GDR did that, they lost then citizenship"
"So I mean, could you actually give up your GDR citizenship yourself?"
"The moment I traveled out of the GDR forever, then I lost my GDR citizenship. So you go to the West and then you don't come back. That's how it is. So you then got West German citizenship. That was what the GDR always objected to. So that was the so-called Hallstein Doctrine. Or in the so-called former eastern territories, so East Prussia, Pomerania, Silesia. So if they had German ancestors, then they were also Germans and the Federal Republic presumed to be allowed to speak for them. This had the consequence that as a GDR citizen, if you were traveling anywhere in the world, say in Brazil or Indonesia, then you could go to the West German embassy and say, I ask for asylum. And then you get it immediately. Fantastic. Bye. I wish you a nice vacation when we see each other. Thank you. Thank you very much. And then we'll see each other next week at the latest. Bye. I'll plunge you into ruin. You could go there and get a German passport immediately. And the GDR was completely against that."
"But could something like that be avoided? So the GDR government?"
"The point was, and the GDR raised this demand again and again as long as it existed. They shouldn't recognize the citizenship, the Federal Republic shouldn't recognize the citizenship of the GDR. It would be enough if they respected the citizenship of the GDR and didn't treat GDR citizens like federal citizens by giving them a West German passport. But now people traveled to the Federal Republic. And after they had been there a while, they suddenly realized that this Federal Republic wasn't as great as they had imagined. And therefore they had to, it can be explained logically, therefore they had to paint the country they came from in the blackest possible colors in order to give themselves the feeling and the certainty that they had improved their situation. They are doing better now than they were before. And that's why they exaggerated and distorted this image of the GDR. And that, so the really bad thing, the curious thing is that quite a few of these people who had emigrated returned to their old homeland after the Wende and were angry there that now others wanted to live in the house they once lived in, because they had sold the house when they emigrated. And now they said, there were also very many court cases, but a lot of them came back."
"Really, but if they come back now, won't they be put on trial and told that they committed 'flight from the Republic'?"
"They were already there, because in the West German interpretation was... So if they return to the GDR now... They were gone, they came back after the Wende."
"So were there people who went back to the GDR before the fall of the wall?"
"There were a few, but most stayed. No, but after the Wende a lot came back to their old homeland, because they then realized, that's their history, their friends were there, they went to school there and you can't take that with you. So they returned. On the other hand, it is said that between 1949 and 1989, when the two German states existed, about three million GDR citizens moved to the Federal Republic. Three million. And according to the West German interpretation, it was a so-called voting with their feet. Okay, what does that mean?"
"That means, everyone who went to the West showed the red card to the socialism of the GDR. So that was a vote for the Western system against the Eastern system. That was the official interpretation."
"But was it really like that for most people?"
"No, because, so that meant in plain English, it would have been a political decision. But it wasn't, most were so-called economic refugees who simply said, I only have one life and I only have one working life and then I choose the country where I am better off. And there the idea was, I'm better off in the Federal Republic than in the GDR. Then I go to the West. According to today's reading, that means they were economic refugees and not political refugees, but they were treated as political refugees in the West. So, and if they had been political refugees, i.e. people who left the GDR for political reasons and went to the Federal Republic, then that meant in plain English, that would mean that after the GDR was gone and the political system of the West also existed here in the East, that they all should have stayed here. Since 1990, three million East Germans have moved to the Western states, just as many as went from the GDR to the Federal Republic between 1949 and 1989. That many East Germans have moved to the West German states since 1990. So it has absolutely nothing to do with politics, but it was a purely economic decision. So politics was one, it was a reason, but it wasn't the most important one. It wasn't the decisive reason."
"But it was instrumentalized by the West in this way, there were then subsidies and support and so on. And that, they wanted, the West wanted the GDR to bleed out, bleed out in terms of personnel until 1961, that's why the Wall was built, because people could only emigrate in a controlled manner. And that is also the interesting thing, until 1961 mainly qualified people went over, skilled workers, doctors, other scientists, they went over to the West, because of course a doctor in the GDR earned significantly less than a doctor in the West. So and that means the GDR paid for the training of these people, but the West profited from the work. So and with the building of the Wall in 1961 that was over. With that, the Federal Republic now had a problem. There was a shortage of labor. In the West there was a shortage of labor. And there they started to bring in so-called guest workers (Gastarbeiter) in Italy, in Spain, in Portugal, who in principle filled the gap that the missing GDR citizens had torn."
"I read a book about guest workers earlier and I have to look up when guest workers actually traveled to Germany. The 60s, really? I have to look. 50s. No wait, 50s. I saw that in the book. Let me see. Where is it? So just on Wikipedia, let's see. Guest workers. We only recently celebrated the 50th year when the first guest worker arrived."
" , that wasn't that long ago. So as I said, 62, 63, 64, somewhere around there. They campaigned massively. And then they had a problem. They brought their families over and stayed there. , and then came the rotation strategy or whatever it's called. What's the word? Where is it? I have it here somewhere. So that is a policy that the guest workers work here in Germany for two or three years and then they go back to their home country. So to avoid this situation that the families come to Germany."
"Exactly. And now it is the case that meanwhile economic refugees from all over the world come here and they are now supposed to be deported. They are not wanted. So this is, if you will, looking at the whole picture, the last decades, this is the consequence of this classic immigration policy. Namely that if you need workers and scientific personnel, you buy people everywhere in the world. I'm now traveling in Vietnam looking for medical nursing staff. But if they are here then, then you won't get rid of them anymore. So that means you don't think ahead. You only think, we have a problem here, we need nursing staff. So where do we get it from as quickly as possible? So you go to Vietnam, then you go to South America and invite the people. And then they don't leave. So all of this is very short-sighted and looking at the whole picture dangerous, because of course the social structure of a society is also thrown into disarray there. There are then, the refugees who came from Syria for example and from Africa, of course an attempt was made to make things as easy as possible for them here. And they came with large families and they were also supported. And that created the consequence of the problem that people here, who worked hard, went to the factory for eight hours every day to earn money. They didn't have as much money at their disposal as a refugee family that was supported. This naturally stokes social envy. That means you have a political problem in society. Some feel neglected and see that others are favored. And right-wing extremist parties, the AfD, try to solve that. By saying, deport, deport immediately, which is of course nonsense. So I don't solve the problem with that. And this announcement, I have my family doctor, she is around 50 and she is the child of Croatian immigrants. And they came to Berlin as guest workers. And built their lives and she is the daughter. When the AfD started sounding off about deporting foreigners and migrants, these doctors, who have spent most of their lives here, got scared."
"Doesn't she have a German passport?"
"Of course she has a German passport. But they said the second generation should get out. Was she really afraid that she had to leave? , that she had to leave. So, I can safely say such women would never vote for the AfD in their lives. So that means this immigration policy that the federal government has been making since 1990 and had also made before, has not been very smart. Many things only to solve current problems. But that runs through all areas. Economy, we have a problem, then we take out a loan. The succeeding generations will have to pay the interest for these loans taken out today later, which is immense, that is always glossed over. Because these politicians naturally say, well, we'll be dead by then, let's do it. So that's pretty criminal. True."
"So, back to the topic. What I actually wanted to ask today is whether you have experiences or stories that have something to do with the Stasi. For example, I know you were a journalist in the past, were there colleagues who were under state surveillance because they said something wrong or wrote something wrong? Because that is what I learned in movies and books."
"Not everything that is printed and not everything that is filmed is true. True. So, I always talk concretely about myself and my working environment.
So, we must first assume that journalists are always interesting for secret services of all countries. . Why? Journalists are always traveling and they are naturally curious because they have to write. Report. And they usually go to places where regular people wouldn't go. Or aren't allowed to go. So, you can trace that through world history. Espionage is the second oldest profession in the world, that's already in the Bible. The oldest profession is of course prostitution, but the second oldest profession is espionage. Okay. Already in the Bible. And it's over thousands of years old. So, journalists were of course interesting for the foreign intelligence of the GDR. The MfS, the State Security, was different than in other countries, there are different services. Like here in the Federal Republic you have the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, that is for domestic affairs. . Then you have the Federal Intelligence Service, that is for foreign affairs. . Then you have the MAD, the Military Counterintelligence Service, that is exclusively responsible for the military. Okay. Then there is the Federal Criminal Police Office. . That is for domestic affairs. It's also a secret service. Okay. So, in the GDR that was all concentrated in one single intelligence service, that was the MfS. . So. There was a division within the MfS. You had a part, under the umbrella of the MfS, in the Federal Republic or in the UK or in the USA, under the umbrella of the NSA you have 18 different secret services. . In the GDR, as I said, there was one umbrella, that was the MfS, underneath there was the defense (counterintelligence). . That was responsible for domestic affairs. Then there was foreign intelligence, that was the HVA. HVA, okay. So, and these two services, they worked so effectively, more effectively at least than these services here, because there was always an exchange. So. The defense, I'll explain the basics first here, the defense was concerned with warding off foreign attacks by intelligence services on the GDR. Okay. While foreign intelligence was busy investigating the people outside the national borders who planned or carried out attacks on the GDR, so other foreign intelligence services. Then someone said at some point, well, but if the foreign services have people working for them inland, then the citizens of the GDR were placed under general suspicion that everyone was potentially suited to work for a Western power. That also explained why the defense was expanded. . So. That's the basic thing here. And now journalists come into play. . So I'm talking about myself. So after my first trade fair trip in 1979 as a journalist, I worked very late in the GDR. I studied until 1978. Oh. I studied until 1978 and then had, in the first year, then I got a journalistic assignment that was again connected to Honecker. . I can tell that later. So I traveled to the Federal Republic to track down people there that I was supposed to write about. And when I came back to the GDR, I got a visit from an envoy of foreign intelligence. Okay. And obviously I was asked, since I now regularly travel to the West as a journalist, if I couldn't occasionally take something with me for people over there, they have to bring something back from people over there. So I had a true task, courier, so courier between the two. Now you have to know that everywhere in the world journalists are approached by secret services and they don't talk to every idiot. . And if they approach you, you must already bring certain characteristics. . Discretion, powers of observation, criteria that are normally expected of journalists. So the fact that I was asked to travel for foreign intelligence, that of course flatters you. . Yeah logically, because not everyone is asked. . So and then I, so until the end of the GDR, so occasionally transported things across the border. Sometimes for him, sometimes here and sometimes there. . Nothing more."
"So, but through that you became an IM, so unofficial collaborator. , I know that. So, what Frank Dolfi has to do with it, so unofficially he occasionally traveled as a courier. . Now there were also journalists in this editorial office who, observed is an exaggeration, so who attentively followed what the colleagues were doing. So there were journalists who were followed? They were not followed, but let's say, working for a public medium. . Newspaper and radio, television. , in the GDR. , also otherwise it's security-relevant in every way. So I believe on Chinese television, the people who work there undergo a security check beforehand. , true, true. Of course. Of course. So, and this kind of security check didn't happen in the editorial office beforehand. But when you were working, then they certainly paid attention to it. Who is he dealing with, is he meeting up, does he beat his wife, does he drink a lot of alcohol. So all those kinds of stories. But that wasn't hidden, everyone knew it. And in that sense it had nothing to do with surveillance. So, or before, when I was in the Navy, the crew consisted of just under 30 people. . And it was known exactly who was the security officer in the team. . But you dealt with it normally. So it wasn't that you were, as I said, constantly in fear. And you could, and you could complain if you had the feeling that some people from the MfS were getting overbearing. Concrete example. . I was driving on a Sunday, Sunday a newspaper was also produced, namely the one for Monday. I was on duty on Sunday and drove my car down Holzmarktstraße to work at the editorial office via Alexanderplatz. Okay. Three lanes on the street. . And left, and I drove in the middle lane, left and right of me there were also others. And the car on the right side suddenly moved to the left, and I swerved to the left as well, and stopped at the intersection, it was red, and I looked over to the guy in the left car, and a woman was sitting in the passenger seat and a guy behind the steering wheel. And I just made an apologetic gesture because I had come over like that, nothing happened, but he felt pushed, and it turns green, we drive across the intersection, and past the intersection he suddenly cuts me off, jumps out of the car and insults me because I had allegedly pushed him. And to emphasize his insult, he took out his service ID from his leather jacket. Okay. And I said, show me, what's going on, and then I memorized exactly the name, I memorized the name and so on, I say, you don't need to discuss, you'll hear from me. Okay. He didn't know how to handle it, and I had a phone number. And I called and said, you have to sort things out. Three days later he was at my house with his superior, bright red face, and he had to apologize to me in front of his superior.. He said, his girlfriend was pregnant and was afraid, so cheese (nonsense), and I said, look, I'm complaining about this, but how many people, when you pull this stunt, don't dare complain. And for them that is the state power. So, I just want to say with this. So, he was State Security? He was from the MfS. Okay. And he wanted to make an impression by showing his service ID.. And I said, look, what's your name?. And then I called and said, so and so, well. And then he had to show up with his superior at my house to apologize. Okay. I still said, that's nonsense, so you don't do that. Or here, when I went out here at the Friedrichstraße train station border crossing, and the border guards, they always made such an unfriendly face, all border guards in the world, then I said, look, you don't have to look so grim, I can't help it that you have to sit there and I can walk through here. Everyone has their job. So there was that too. So I don't want to say, there were rules of the game in the GDR and if you mastered them, you lived, let's say, very freely and unconstrained. Like we live today. If you follow the rules. And not like today, but actually better, because if you complained for example, there was a so-called Petitions Law (Eingabengesetz) in the GDR. Okay. If you feel badly treated, by some authority or if you had any problem with your apartment and it wasn't reacted to, then you complained, then you complained with a so-called petition (Eingabe). Okay. A term was petition. There was a law about that. And this law obliged all institutions and authorities to react to this petition within 14 days, within 14 days. Often only with an interim response, which means, the problem wasn't solved yet, but they signaled, we have it, this is a complaint arrived. We are taking care of it now. Such a petitions law, as I said, ensured that the communication between bottom and top functioned. That was a rule. So that really worked. That worked. Such a petitions law doesn't exist today. If you complain somewhere as a murder victim, usually, if you write to an editorial office, if you write to the ministries, if you write to the Federal President, that doesn't mean that you even get an answer. True. You are working in a black box. So you can't say it was the same back then as today. No. As far as petitions and the authorities' reaction to complaints from the population are concerned, there were laws that mandated it. That was different. That doesn't exist anymore today. Today too. You can of course today, if you have money, you hire a lawyer. And then you can take it to court. And then you can sue your way through the instances. But all of this is tied to money here. So. A petition like that, that was a stamp for 20 Pfennig. You stuck it on and threw it in the mailbox. You knew they have to react, they have to answer. Okay. Just as the MfS had to react when this idiot showed his ID and played state power. I complained about that too. And there he had to, and the reaction was, he had to report with his superior. And I'm pretty sure he didn't get promoted for the next three to five years. So, that had consequences for him. Okay. Well. Okay. But that is interesting. That is a story nobody tells. because, look. Up here the extended Friedrichstraße merges into Chausseestraße. On the left sits the headquarters... Well, is it gone? it's gone. Now the headquarters of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is sitting there. There was a stadium there before. That was torn down in the 90s, during GDR times. There was a stadium, that was torn down in the 90s. Because Berlin had bid for the Olympic Games in 2008. But they didn't get it, but the stadium was already torn down. Okay. And then, because they supposedly wanted to build a sports hall there, but then they didn't need it because there were no Olympic Games. And maybe something like the Bird's Nest in Beijing would have been built there, a great stadium. And instead, the Federal Intelligence Service, this headquarters, was built. Okay. If you walk past there.then you will be photographed without you noticing. [If you walk in…] The first thing they will ask for is your passport, then they have your name, then they run that through their computer and then they find out your personal information.
"But do you have people you know, so maybe colleagues or cousins or grandparents, who are really investigated by the Stasi now, or are under surveillance?"
"Well, there is a friend of mine, Hans Modrow, who was Prime Minister of the GDR, who from 1973 to 1989, was First Secretary of the SED district leadership in Dresden. He was also under surveillance. He was also under surveillance, specifically his phone was tapped. Okay. And we have, and he has also been under surveillance by the Federal Intelligence Service since 1956, so by both services. Okay. And in the 2000s and 2010s he, everyone gets Stasi files. But not the BND files. Okay. And he campaigned for it, because he said, equality between East Germans and West Germans is achieved when both the Stasi files and the files of the West German intelligence services, not only the Stasi files there, because the East Germans became transparent like a glass man through these Stasi files. The West Germans had no problems because their files were still locked away. . So, and he then sued and that went through all instances up to the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig. Okay. So the trial is called Hans Modrow against the Federal Republic of Germany. And there were four BND officers sitting in the dock on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. And this trial took place of all places in the hall and also on the day when the Reichstag Fire trial against Dimitrov and others took place in 1934. Okay. So that was a special note. And he was proven right and the Federal Intelligence Service had to print out his files that were created on Hans Modrow. But that's the way it is in the Federal Republic. Then there is an archive law and that protects the archival materials for 30 years. That means they were only allowed to hand out what happened 30 years ago. Oh. And since time went on, that meant that every quarter of a year, going back 30 years, they always had to produce such criminal files. I have them. He gave them to me right away, these natural pains and so on. But from these files it is clear that the West German intelligence service knew more about the GDR than the GDR and its secret services knew about West Germany. So they were much more deeply entangled in GDR society than is admitted today. So right into the political leadership."
"But did they admit it?"
"I think negatively. So the BND likes to portray itself as a bumbling secret service. So they don't deny when some journalist writes about the mistakes they made again or something. They let it stand, they don't admit it. So I also wrote a book about this file, about this trial with Hans Modrow. , maybe I can read that. , although that was 10 years ago. I don't think it exists anymore. No, you can find it online. There are online archives. The thing is called 'I want my file' (Ich will meine Akte). Can you look it up? I want my file. File. . Author is called Robert Alas I think. I want my files. File. File. Let's see if I have internet. Is there no Wi-Fi? No, I don't have Wi-Fi. So can I now? Hello? What is the Wi-Fi here? Oh. Oh God, oh God, oh God. Excuse me? Bombay Gast. Bombay Gast? Okay. Password? Bombay-Colernas-Rab, Bombay-Colernas-Rab. Bombay. Three times the 2. Three times the 2. Okay, thank you. So what is the name of the book? I want my file. I want my file. Oh, not old (alte). I want my file. , you can find that. Hans Modrow and the Western spies. , . No, you can still buy it. , it's there. No, I will find it. . And there will probably be many questions answered in it. . And how that structured, that we should sink. So that was pretty exciting. And the moment Hans Modrow died, three years ago, the BND immediately stopped delivering the files. I've never received any since. Okay. And how much they pursued that. When I was still working at Junge Welt (newspaper), I occasionally wrote certain articles about secret service problems under a pseudonym. . And my pseudonym was Licht (light) specifically my brother-in-law's. That was my wife's maiden name, not me. Okay. And when he wanted to travel to the USA with a woman for a vacation in the 90s, he was pulled aside in Frankfurt am Main. And then he was questioned by the secret service whether he knew this or that person.Because of my pseudonym and his name, they assumed, because the name wasn't very common, they assumed that he was related to him in some way. And while I knew that I used that as a pseudonym, he naturally said, I don't know, never heard of it, don't know. . Then they let him go. But that was of course, he told me that later, casually, because he didn't know that it had anything to do with it. . And then I noticed how much they had registered that. So in the 80s, but in the 90s they were still pursuing it just for the name Schumann. Who was that. That's how it is."
"So you had written that in the GDR. But in the 90s the West Germans knew. But they still hadn't figured out who it was and so he was questioned because of the identical name. . And wanted to know if he knew him and who it was. Okay. So and there you notice that it, you see. Something is wrong."
"It hasn't changed. I had a time until the 90s, into the 2000s, where every year I wrote to the state commissioner of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of the State of Berlin. Every time, I wrote to him and always asked three questions. A. Whether it is true that I am being observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. B. On what grounds. And C. How long are they going to keep doing that. Okay. And every time the answer came that of course I am not being observed. But I knew that they were observing me, namely through certain things. So, you noticed that. I have, for example, if I had authors. So generally from State Security. And when they were with me at the publisher's, there were always conspicuously clean-shaven young men. Who were always there as long as they were with me. And I then said at the window, not to get them inside, are they yours? No, they said, they are from a different field post number (department). Okay. So, you always noticed that then. I want to, it has settled down in the meantime, because the leadership. The interest has of course subsided in the meantime, because, as I said, the leadership is getting better, is gone. And they now have other areas of activity, Chinese, Russians. Here in the East was, that is history, they are no longer interested. But they kept it up for quite a long time. And we of course always asked ourselves, what are they afraid of? That we are staging a coup here. No idea. That we are smoking out the headquarters in Chausseestraße is nonsense. But with that we are at the starting point, every intelligence service needs an enemy. It has to justify its existence with it. It constantly has to provide proof that we don't earn so much money for nothing, because they have so much to do. There are so many enemies. Here in Germany there is the hybrid warfare of the Russians. There are the cyber attacks by the Chinese. They have so much to do. And that's why, as I said, if you were to march into the visitor department, that is immediately part of hybrid warfare. That is a potential cyber attack. Who says that you didn't drop a bug somewhere when you crossed the threshold? Then people will be busy for a week carefully searching the visitor center."
"Okay. Interesting. So, those were the questions from me actually. Nice. So I didn't know what life was like in the past. So I had thought that people used to be afraid of the Stasi, that you were really monitored every day, that the Stasi knew everything about you."
"Life in China today was exactly like life in the GDR. Oh, I see. I always tell my comrades with whom I am friends, also Comrade Wang. . I say, when I'm traveling in China, I feel like I'm in the GDR. That's the interaction with each other. . The openness. So I say, when I'm out with Chinese, perfectly normal people, they don't mince words. , true. So you can say whatever you want. That's how it is, that's how it is. I don't know if I've told this before, but in an autonomous Tibetan area and in a restaurant, there were only two pictures hanging on the wall, namely Mao and Deng. . But I ask, where is the third? Then the operator of the restaurant said, for me Xi is just a man of transition. He first has to prove himself to hang up there. True. So. And, well, you can't be more open than that. So if someone, if he had been afraid, then the interpreter was also sitting there. Then he would have always said something else. He had no fear. Why should he? So, I say, broken down, life in the GDR was as free and as unfree as life in the People's Republic of China today. Period. Okay. And then you can judge for yourself how free or how unfree you feel, where the strengths are, where the disadvantages lie, and so on. So, the GDR, to put it in one sentence, was not paradise. But it was also not the hell that the West makes it out to be today. Okay. And this claim that the Federal Republic was a constitutional state, while the GDR was an unjust state, is also nonsense. We had our own law. . The GDR was a constitutional state, in which there was also injustice. Just as there is injustice in the Federal Republic. That's how it is. So, one always has to be very careful when speaking about the GDR today. . There are those who transfigure it and make it sound nicer than it was. But that is a dying minority. And then there are those, and they are victims, if you will, of Western propaganda. They make the GDR sound worse than it actually was. Above all, and this is the funny thing. Above all, young people born after the 90s. . They know exactly what was going on in the GDR. Exactly. Okay. Good. That would be all the questions for today then. Sure."
"I am in Berlin until the 22nd. And still museums and talks or what? What is to become of these talks? Research. So, I am very interested in how that... Research in what fields, for what? On life in the GDR. What is that going to be? A doctoral thesis? Nothing, for Abitur (high school graduation). For Abitur? , for Abitur. That's why I didn't prepare that many difficult questions for him. They aren't difficult questions, stupid answers. , of course. I think probably for a Chinese person the most understandable thing is to say, it was as free and as unfree as in the People's Republic of China. I can understand that. That is comprehensible. You know where the limits are and where it's better to pause your step. . And where crossing these boundaries, but you were afraid and scared of the consequences. Okay."
"But there were victims, weren't there?"
"How do you define victims? Well, you know, the dead? No, not the dead, but politically. Politically speaking. , sure. I mean... Of course. In every state there are also victims. How do you define victims? If someone went to prison... So, went to prison if they said something against the regime. You can't go to prison for that. You went to prison if you violated laws. And for example, if you degraded institutions of the state, then that had consequences. If you burn the national flag in the USA, Stars and Stripes... Then you go to...? That's the same consequence. The degradation of the symbols of the state. That means, this kind of legality existed. . And if you went to the Bundestag today and dumped a cart full of manure in front of the door... That would also have legal consequences. That would be breach of the peace, property damage. There are paragraphs for all of that. So, it would have consequences. . And such consequences also existed in the GDR. I admit that in certain areas the consequences would be somewhat harsher than in this state here. For the same matter of fact. But that was of course always with the proviso. These crimes were mostly committed by people who wanted to get out of the GDR. And there was the instrument of the so-called buying free (Freikauf). I knew that. I knew that terday. , of course. The buying free meant nothing else than that the GDR said, we financed the education of these people. The school attendance, the studies. . So. That costs so and so much. If someone wanted them, they profit when they become part of the Federal Republic. Then it must cost. That is a service that the GDR has rendered, so you have to pay for it. . And that was the so-called buying free. So I've heard that this buying free plays a very big role in the GDR. , of course. That's why those who had to pay it, what was to be paid, usually measured according to the verdict. . The harsher and higher the verdict was, the more had to be paid. And therefore we were naturally interested in reaching into the top drawer for such crimes.
"Which many people would certainly have taken advantage of, if they had been supposed to join the army, they initially handled it as a volunteer army and after the building of the Wall, conscription was introduced. And then you could never evade it, but the really exciting thing about it was that since '65 or '66, well I don't even know since when exactly, the GDR granted the possibility to refuse armed service for religious reasons. Units were created, they were construction soldiers, who were then only use d for building and didn't have to carry a weapon. And thus the GDR was the only army in the Eastern Bloc where such a thing existed. And the UN has something like..."
"So, the UN introduced this at the end of the 80s, so over 20 years after the GDR introduced it, they essentially also introduced that states should grant their citizens the possibility, if they are drafted into the army, that they can refuse armed [DDR] service."
"Okay.
"So, where were we?"
"No, at the UN about the armed service. That one could refuse..."
"I don't know who you talked to. Were they officers in the NVA, or?"
"No, it was a former GDR policeman."
"The policeman is in the army?"
" , but he said that he was formerly in the army."
"Oh."
"Before he was a policeman."
"He then just changed the uniform here."
"He told me that the police are another kind of army. Well, and no, so I would agree with that and say ."
"Also with the police there was this command hierarchy, like in the army. And the boss of the army was an army general with four stars."
"And with the police the boss was also an army general, or rather , it was always an army general with four stars. So I'll put it this way, of course there was already a certain commonality, but of course also a certain difference."
"Sure, but I think that is probably the case everywhere in every country."
"And what was, he was a policeman in the end, ?"
"Rank?"
"I think so, ."
"What rank did he have, ?"
"Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Major."
"Didn't you actually ask me? I think he made it maximum Lieutenant."
"Lieutenant?"
" ."
"He didn't make it that far?"
"No idea, I didn't ask him."
" , moving on, I was a First Lieutenant at Sea (Oberleutnant zur See). "
"What is higher than Lieutenant, so Lieutenant and...?"
"No, so Second Lieutenant is one star, two stars is Lieutenant, three stars is First Lieutenant, four stars is Captain, or in the Navy, where I was, four stars is Lieutenant Commander. And then came the, as I said, the braided shoulder straps, that started with Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, and then came the gold stripes, and in the People's Navy the Major was Corvette Captain, and the Lieutenant Colonel was Frigate Captain, and the Colonel was Captain at Sea. And then it started as Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and then Admiral. In this respect it followed, let's say, German military history, or let's say also the Russian Wehrmacht, which were in this structure, and that was in principle actually a directive when the NVA was built up in the 50s, and then a Soviet military delegation led by Zhukov, the Minister of Defense, and they looked at the uniforms, and then they said, they look like the Soviet uniform, you are a German army, and then not only did the gray uniform come back, like the Wehrmacht uniform was, but also the ranks."
"So what color was the uniform of the policemen in the past?"
"Green."
"Green? During the Nazi era or during that time?"
"Both. The police were green, and in the Federal Republic, since it strongly oriented itself to American conditions, it then became blue."
"Oh. And the uniform of the Navy, so in the GDR era?"
"It was blue."
"That was the Killer Blues [Uniform der Marine], it was white, but what does that matter? The uniform was blue."
"Oh."
"But that is the case with most navies in the world, they naturally follow the English model."
" ."
"This knot that was worn, that was a sign of mourning for a lost naval battle. And since you couldn't mourn forever, then the knot came, and that was a sign of mourning for a lost naval battle. And since you couldn't mourn forever, a white bow tie was added on top. With that, the mourning was lifted or ended, or whatever. So in the Navy, every button and every ribbon and every stripe has a special meaning. Without tradition."
" . So I saw, there are a lot of flags, so on the ship, what do they actually mean? Very, very many complex flags."
" , . It has, let's say, every flag has a certain meaning. But they add up. So there are several dozen. And they are raised up in certain situations. For example, when you are at anchor or when a diver has just gone overboard. Then it becomes, that is in principle the signal for ships passing by. Or if you are holding an exercise, so that they know what is currently happening with the ship. In addition, there are regulations, for example, if two ships meet at sea, then the so-called flag is dipped. That means you pull the flag down briefly as a greeting and then it is pulled up. So the national flags. And then it is stipulated that the civilian ship is the first to dip the flag, i.e. pull it down, to greet the naval ship. And that was of course funny, if you drove past a 100,000 ton tanker with your small minesweeper, which was maybe 30 meters long, a huge pot, you needed more than a minute to get past it. But it had to dip the flag first, but that's the way it is in Christian seafaring."
"Tradition is everything. At sea."
"So you were a GDR citizen in the past. And last week I was at the Stasi museum in Hohenschönhausen, so I want to ask whether all GDR citizens have personal files?"
"That is the Western propaganda that claims that every GDR citizen was monitored, that there is a full file on everyone. That is nonsense. There were of course partial files, meaning in parts they are brought up in procedures, but the number is manageable, it was maybe a few hundred thousand.
18 million, 18 million [GDR Citizens]. Only a fraction. Incidentally, I'll say, even in China files are not created for 1.4 billion people. But I assume that a part of the Chinese are in the sights of the security services in this way. But that is a completely normal procedure, it's like that everywhere in the world. But such institutions like this street museum [Stasi Museum] are of course there to make propaganda today, to give people the impression: be glad what prison you are in now. Life here is tense and crappy, but it used to be much worse. That's the background."
It is a pure propaganda exhibition. There are 180 kilometers of files, so all spying files on GDR citizens. Out of these 180 kilometers, there are not that many [actual spy files]. It includes all archival documents there, instructional letters from the armed organs, normal security checks. It's like that in every country. If you are employed somewhere, at a public institution or a private service, and if that happens in a security-relevant area, a security check takes place beforehand. Files were also created about that. These are numbers that are deliberately projected to show the entire misery and the extent of the monitoring. That is bullshit."
"They [Students] are driven there. It's a mandatory visit.I think that is a similar propaganda to what the SED did. So it is similar."
The GDR and the SED, which were the leading force in this state, made propaganda for this state, which is similar to China, and which is completely legitimate. And this Federal Republic is now making propaganda against the other state, namely the GDR. China of course also makes propaganda for 5,000 years of cultural history. And that is also completely correct. No country in the world can say, we have 5,000 years of national history. We invented writing, we invented paper, we invented gunpowder. You can be proud of that. And you can show that. I was recently in a museum near Chengdu with these bronze figures. A huge modern museum, fantastic. What else is that but propaganda?"
"That is cultural propaganda."
"Of course, of course. And that is completely fine. It is completely fine to convey pride in one's own nation, in one's own country in this way. There is nothing to criticize about that."
"You could say that. I saw a very interesting film that in all museums and all tours something bad is said about the Soviet Union. Why?"
"For over 100 years there has been an anti-Slavic, anti-Russian basic sentiment in this German people."
"Why? I mean, the East wasn't so hostile with Prussia or the Germans."
"For example, against Napoleon. The Prussian and Russian troops fought together against Napoleon.
Then the imperial houses were related to each other. The German Emperor Wilhelm, during the First World War, and his cousin Nikolai, the Russian Tsar, met regularly on the island of Usedom until 1914, an island on the North Sea.
And then came this war in 1914 and as a result Russia was declared an enemy. And this anti-Russian spirit and this enemy image was then further reinforced in 1917 after the October Revolution."
"The Nazis used this to carry out the Judeo-Bolshevism narrative in 1941, when they invaded the Soviet Union. And this language of being defeated and occupied, German big capital has never forgiven the Russians for. In 1985, for the very first time, a Federal President, namely Richard von Weizsäcker, spoke in the German Bundestag on May 8th about the day of liberation. It was always only the day of defeat, the day of the overthrow, the day of occupation. It was always negatively connotated. And these anti-Russian resentments, these anti-Soviet resentments, persisted during the Cold War. And now, since the war in Ukraine, they have flared up again. And now Russia is the declared enemy. And there, they cater to these very deep anti-Russian resentments, especially among West Germans. The fear of the Russians who will come back tomorrow to occupy us.
"Every society needs an enemy."
"I have to say, I don't know what it's like in the People's Republic of China at the moment. So for a while the Chinese got by without enemy images. And on the other hand, of course you have to see, the enemies hadn't disappeared, but they were really working against the GDR as a state. They wanted to turn our lights out. And I think that's similar in the People's Republic of China. The People's Republic of China is the declared enemy of the Americans. Because basically there is a classic polarization. It's the USA against China. Those are the two great powers. Russia is no longer a great power. If I take away the 6000 nuclear warheads, there isn't much left. Russia is no longer an economic great power. There are only two economic great powers. That is China and that is the USA. And the USA is a great power that is declining. Which is in decline while the Chinese have been on the rise over the last 40 years. And from this natural rivalry and the fact that the Americans are in decline, this conflict naturally intensifies. The Americans do not want to stop being number one and they do not want to cede this place to the Chinese. From this, of course, enemy images arise on the next side. That's how it is."
"True. So in the past the enemy image was the Republic of China, the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union. I mean the break in Chinese and Soviet relations in the 60s and then the Soviet Union threatened to attack the north of China. Then China's enemy image in the 70s was the Soviet Union."
"So the break stemmed from the late 50s. That was the Great Leap Forward at the end of the 50s. That was the consequence of this strange policy. The fact is that Moscow had the General Secretary at the time and Mao was the great leader. In the 70s both parties, both the communist parties in the Soviet Union and the communist parties in China, fought for leadership in the world communist movement. The Chinese said we have significantly more culture than the Russians. Mao claimed leadership in the world communist movement for the Chinese parties, which the Russians rejected. The justification was, we have been in power since 1917. This ideological dispute escalated to the point that the Russians pulled out all their advisors overnight and the unfinished major construction projects were left unfinished. This resulted in the policy of the Great Leap Forward, that Mao then said every farmer should have his own blast furnace behind every village and all those stories. Moscow enforced this conflict in all allied parties. The GDR recommended to its head from Hungary, Bulgaria... They had to break off relations with China, which was not necessarily in the GDR's interest. In the 80s we tried to establish conspiratorial contacts with China and the dispute. We were with Gorbachev in '85 and Gorbachev forbade Honecker from going to China because he wanted to be the first. Honecker said, I promised the Chinese, not me. Honecker was General Secretary at the time and he knew them from the World Federation of Democratic Youth from the 40s and 50s. So Honecker was the first Eastern Bloc leader to go to China."
"The GDR was motivated ideologically and it even escalated militarily. That was during the border conflict in 1969. I took a look at that, it's so funny. You stand on a watchtower. Across the Ussuri you have a Russian no man's land and behind you you have a Chinese no man's land. There is an island on the river and they fought over this ridiculous little island. Absurd. That was 1969. In the late 80s the relationship with the Russians normalized. I can remember, it's been almost 10 years now, when we were there at the Ussuri and the island was being developed jointly by Russians and Chinese. There is a large shopping center and so on. The small border traffic works there. There was a meeting and there were older Chinese border guards there and younger Chinese border guards and also Russian older and younger ones and the old ones. They quarreled with each other and kept their distance. The young ones, who were not there at the time, did not learn that."
